CELEBRITIES OF THE YEAR: FROM THE MOST BORING TO THE MOST TALENTED

MOST TALENTED AND LUCKIEST CELEBRITIES

DEMI MOORE

She appeared in one episode of his hit TV series Moonlighting in 1989. 1988/89 saw Moore in The Seventh Sign and We’re No Angels, but it was another year before she made the Hollywood A-list (and netted a Golden Globe nomination) with 1990's Ghost. The next decade brought Moore three daughters, high-profile nude poses on covers of Vanity Fair, television appearances, “Best Dressed” and “Most Beautiful” titles, investment in the financially insecure Planet Hollywood chain, separation (after 10 years) from Willis, and before- and behind-the-camera roles in a string of movies -- Nothing But Trouble (1991), Mortal Thoughts (1991, also co-producer), The Butcher’s Wife (1991), A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993 - MTV Movie and People’s Choice and ShoWest awards), Disclosure (1994), Now and Then (1995, also produced), The Scarlet Letter (1995 - daughter Tallulah appeared as well), The Juror (1996 - People’s Choice award), Striptease (1996 - oops, a Razzie for worst actress; daughter Rumer also appeared), Deconstructing Harry (1997), GI Jane (1997, also produced), Destination Anywhere (1997), and the Austin Powers movies (1997 and 1999, produced). The husky-voiced Moore lent her eloquence, as well, to animated films and a spoken word CD. In 1999 Moore added “editor” to her list of accomplishments, taking on that assignment for the millennium issue of Marie Claire magazine. Upcoming are roles in Basic Instinct 2 and Passion of Mind. Moore has risen to the top of her profession with a determination that is alternately mocked and respected by her peers. She is flippantly accused of “naked ambition,” but this star’s drive is backed by nothing less than style, talent, beauty and brains.

CELEBRITIES OF THE YEAR: FROM THE MOST BORING TO THE MOST TALENTED

MOST TALENTED AND LUCKIEST CELEBRITIES

ELIZABETH HURLEY

Name: Elizabeth Hurley. Birth Name: Elizabeth Jane Hurley. Height: 5'. 9". Nationality: British. Birth Date: June 10, 1965. Birth Place: Hampshire, England, UK. Occupation: Actress, model, producer. Education: Boarding school (studying ballet at age 12) London Studio Center, London, U.K. (majored in Dance and Theatre) Relationship: Arun Nayar (Indian; businessman), Stephen Bing (producer, writer; together from 2000-2001), Hugh Grant (actor; born on September 9, 1960; together from 1986-2000), Ted Forstmann (executive). Father: Army officer. Mother: Schoolteacher. Sister: Katie Hurley (literary agent; older). Brother: Michael Hurley (engineer; younger). Son: Damian Charles Hurley (born on April 4, 2002 at London’s Portland Hospital). Claim to fame: as Vanessa Kensington in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). Agent: Creative Artist Agency, 9830 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Ca 90212, USA.

BIOGRAPHY SYNOPSIS: Elizabeth Hurley fights back. She won a 1997 libel suit against the tabloid that dared imply she could be “rented out to the highest bidder.” She successfully stifled paparazzi claims that she intentionally flashed her undergarments at a gala event, arguing that only their camera angles made the peek-a-boo possible. Finally, in relationship-hopping Hollywood, she has continued to stand fiercely by long-time partner, fellow actor Hugh Grant, even after his indulgence in a sordid and very public scandal. Hurley briefly attended a ballet boarding school in her native England at age 12, and continued with her performance bent when she won a scholarship to the dance and theatre college, London Studio Centre. After changing her image from pink-haired punk to glam conformist, the actor was cast in Aria (1987). She met Grant during her next movie, Remando al Viento/Rowing With The Wind (1987 - re-release 2000). British TV appearances followed, in two Inspector Morse episodes (1987 and 1988), the Christabel miniseries (1988), and the movies Act of Will (TV - 1989) and Death Has A Bad Reputation (1990).

Her European big and small screen roles continued with Der Skipper/Kill Cruise (1990), Orchid House (TV - 1991), and El Largo Invierno (1991). Hurley broke into Hollywood in 1992 with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (2 episodes, TV) and Passenger 57. Steady work followed in Beyond Bedlam (1993), Nightscare (1993), Sharpe’s Enemy (TV - 1994), Shameless (1995), Mad Dogs and Englishmen (1995), The World of 007 (TV - 1995), The Shamrock Conspiracy (TV - 1995), Harrison: Cry of the City (TV - 1995), Samson and Delilah (TV - 1996), and Happy Birthday Elizabeth: A Celebration of Life (TV - 1997). Hurley’s blockbuster stardom began with the successful Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) and its sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). In between were roles in the films Dangerous Ground (1997), Permanent Midnight (1998), My Favorite Martian (1999), and Edtv (1999). Behind the camera, Hurley has produced the Grant vehicles Extreme Measures (1996) and Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) as head of development of Simian Films. As well, she is instantly recognizable as the Estee Lauder spokesmodel -- a contract she was awarded in 1994 at the advanced (for models) age of 29. She has the dubious distinction of being named, recently, the IGN For Men magazine ‘Babe of the Century.’ Coming up for the actor/producer/model are roles in The Weight of Water and Bedazzled. With before- and behind-the-camera success, Hurley -- “every English schoolboy’s fantasy” -- has a solid career as more than a pretty face. Just don’t cross her...

CELEBRITIES OF THE YEAR: FROM THE MOST BORING TO THE MOST TALENTED

ESTELLA WARREN

BIOGRAPHY SYNOPSIS: Estella Warren was born on 23 December, 1978 in Peterborough, Ontario Canada. She began modeling when she was in a fashion show at high school, and her Polaroid was sent to a modeling agent in New York. She soon after appeared in three issues of Italian Vogue with Ellen Von Unwerth. She say's "I thought it would be fun but it was hard work". Estella was then chosen as the model for the Chanel #5 campaign, and then the Perry Ellis campaign. She says she likes modeling because she gets to meet a lot of different people with different backgrounds. "You learn to deal with different characters". Estella also likes the traveling that goes with modeling internationally. As Estella now lives in New York, she says she misses the open space of Canada but that New York has such a fun, fast, invigorating pace.

"You get so much done in a day here". Estella says that to keep her model figure, she exercises a lot. "I get an adrenaline rush after exercising every day. I run, bike, do yoga or hike. I like to take bike rides with my boyfriend. At the gym, I do cardio, sit-ups and stretch". She also says she eats plenty of vegetables, fruit, lean proteins and whole grains. "When I really crave something sweet, I treat myself to cookies and ice cream. I also love steak".  Estella's hobbies include singing, swimming, horseback riding and playing the piano. She says that if she wasn't modeling, she would love to get into acting, or she would want to own a classic French restaurant or a bar/restaurant, because she loves to cook. Of late however, it seems that Estella has decided to take up acting after all. She is going to be in four films set for release in 2001. They are "Driven" in which she plays Sophia Simone, "Planet of the Apes" in which she plays Nova, "Tangled" and "Perfume".

CELEBRITIES OF THE YEAR: FROM THE MOST BORING TO THE MOST TALENTED

MOST TALENTED AND LUCKIEST CELEBRITIES

FIONA APPLE

Name: Fiona Apple. Birth Name: Fiona Apple Maggart. Height: 5'. 2''. Nationality: American. Date: September 17, 1977. Birth Place: New York, New York. Occupation: Musician, song writer. Education: Senior High School (two months home study). Relationship: Paul Thomas Anderson (screenwriter). Father: Brandon Maggart (actor). Mother: Diane McAfee (former singer). Half Brother: Garrett Maggart (actor). Facts: Musician Fiona Apple contributed some music to MAGNOLIA (1999) and is also responsible for many of the paintings seen throughout. When Fiona was 12 years old, she was raped in an apartment where she lived. She has a sister named Amber Maggart. Her birthday is actually September 13, 1977. Quotes: Come on. I got drunk when I was like 5.

BIOGRAPHY SYNOPSIS: "The way I feel about music -- any song, any style -- is that there is no right and wrong, only true and false. If the music and lyrics are conceived out of honesty and if the production of the song goes along with its original message, then what has been expressed is art regardless of what anyone's opinion is of it. No one can negate an honest expression. So things are a lot simpler if you just tell the truth." Sage words. Insightful words. Spoken like a venerable music veteran who's seen it all and maintained integrity at all costs. Except they weren't. They were spoken by a debut artist. One who is yet to perform for the public. One who is 18 years old. But once you hear Fiona Apple's Tidal, her debut album on WORK/Clean Slate, you will not doubt that those words come from a wisdom that is beyond age, that is inherent, uncompromising and straight from the heart. Tidal is ten timeless songs. The music defies boundaries, the lyrics pure evocative poetry -- what you'd expect from someone who's sole influence is Maya Angelou. Although Fiona Apple is first and foremost a songsmith, her piano and haunting, dusky voice are the ultimate vehicles for her art. "It wasn't that I didn't think I had a nice voice, but I consider myself more a writer," Fiona explains. "I played piano since I was about eight, and always wrote songs -- I sang them because it wouldn't make sense for anyone else to." Such songs as "Shadowboxer," Tidal's chill-inducing first single, which explores the danger of desire and vulnerability against an eerie musical motif. Or the steadfast promise -- to seduce? succeed? Fiona hints but won't disclose -- of "Slow Like Honey." Songs that can rock with only the merest suggestion of guitar ("Criminal"), bring you to your feet with delicate dance-ability ("The First Taste"), soar with a rare glimpse of the upper register ("Never Is A Promise") or pulse with implacable strength to music that is stark, percussive and forthrightly primal ("Sleep To Dream").

The songs on Tidal reveal an old-soul eloquence and depth that make rules (paying one's dues, building a fan base, etc., etc.) rather irrelevant. Not that Fiona denied or refused to follow them -- they just didn't apply. "This is something I think I've always wanted to do but didn't say aloud -- I couldn't admit it to myself, because admitting it meant making myself vulnerable to the possibility that it might not happen, and that thought was unbearable. I didn't want to make a move until I knew it was the right thing," Fiona says. "And I wasn't sure until about a year ago." That's when "I decided the doors were open for me," Fiona, a native New Yorker, says. "It's not so much that this is my destiny but I made it my destiny -- it's impossible to imagine life not doing what you want to do." So Fiona, the progeny of an artistic family (her father is an actor and her mother is a real renaissance woman -- singer, dancer, nutritionist, fitness trainer, cook) came to Los Angeles to spend time with her dad, complete her high school education through independent study -- and do a demo. Her objective was to make a slew of tapes and send them out widely -- but she wound up saving the postage. As soon as the tapes were done, Fiona went home to NYC for Christmas, bringing a few copies of her demo along. One tape wound up in the hands of a friend who happened to baby-sit for a prominent music industry executive; the friend passed the three-song demo on to the exec, who in turn played it for a holiday party guest: producer and manager Andrew Slater. "Andy called and said he wanted to meet me," says Fiona, "and we've been working together ever since." At the time, however, Fiona didn't have enough material she felt to be of album quality. "Songs don't just pour out -- so I pressured myself to write," she says. "I'd write two songs a week, and I don't know how I managed it because every time I write a song I don't think I'll be able to write another ever again." Once she was satisfied with the songs, she entered the studio. No parts were written -- which translates into Tidal's breathless spontaneity (indeed, several tracks are one-take wonders) and a certain tendency toward improvisational fade-outs. "We just played," Fiona says simply. Upon the album's release, Fiona embarks on the next phase: performing. "I know it's going to change my life...I'm looking forward to it -- I think that's what all this blood, sweat and tears has been for," she says with a small, dauntless smile. "I'll be nervous, but what else can I do? I won't go backwards." While Fiona Apple's lyrics may be interpreted in many ways, the overriding message of her debut is that life is the sum of experience -- painful and joyous, tangible and emotional, positive and negative. "My album is called Tidal partly because all this has hit me like a tidal wave but also because 'tidal' refers to ebbing and flowing, and that's really what life is, a constant ebb and flow."
