IDF SPOX and
Israeli Police Update: Summary of Today's Events in Gaza.
Dr. Aaron Lerner:
"For some reason the "scorecard" doesn't indicate how many civilians
were wounded by police. MK Michael Eitan (Likud) who chairs the
Knesset Law Committee (and supports disengagement) complained today
that police dealing with crowds at Gush Katif were not wearing their
ID tags in violation of the rules. Eitan noted that the
apparent decision of the officers to send their men in without the
required ID's gives the policemen the message that they can use
brutal force as they cannot be identified by their victims - while
at the same time sending the message to the civilians that the
police intend to go on the rampage with the consequence that
emotions can rise on both sides. Before the operation there were
reports that the police planned to wear special vests with their
names on them and that the vests would be issued at the last minute
so that civilians would not be able to disguise themselves as police
during the expulsion."
VPM Peres: What terrorists say

By Dr. Aaron Lerner. VPM Shimon Peres was asked by Israel Radio

the various Palestinian leaders who have called from continued
attacks against Israel. Peres replied that "what terrorists say
doesn't matter - they are hurting the Palestinians more than they
are hurting Israel." Golan declined to remind Mr. Peres that he used
virtually the same argument during the entire course of Oslo to
defend Yasser Arafat and others who, as an old Foreign Ministry
information campaign used to put it "mean what they say".

Head of Manpower: Soldiers
residing in the Gaza Strip may help their family members.
Head of the manpower branch, Major
General Eliezar Stern, has decided to permit soldiers residing in
the Gaza Strip to help their families pack, and to stay in their
homes up until they are evacuated. This decision revised a previous
one allowing soldiers to have a special leave of absence in order to
help their families pack, but they would have had to return by the
15th August. This decision was made after a special meeting with the
Commander of the Southern Command, Major General Dan Harel, Head of
the Ground Forces Command, Major General Yiftah Ron Tal and Major
General Eliezar Stern. The IDF believes that soldiers will not
actively resist the evacuation, even if it is likely that their
families will. As such the soldiers will be a calming force in the
settlements. The IDF condemns all illegal acts of resistance against
the evacuation, and will prevent any attempt to attack the
evacuating forces.
Two Soldiers Accused of Looting. The military police have opened an investigation into the two soldiers accused of theft in P'at Sade, a community in Gush Katif. The alleged thieves were spotted by a third soldier as they were trying to steal household air conditioners. She reported the event to their commanders, who then called the two in for an inquiry by the battalion commander, during which they admitted to all the charges. In response to the incident the military prosecutor decided to request that the Military Police investigators open an investigation into the activity of the two soldiers. The final report will be passed on to the military prosecutor. Incidents of this nature are contradictory to the moral values and lessons taught by the IDF. Should the charges be substantiated, the IDF will handle the matter with the utmost stringency and resolution, and the soldiers will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Dr. Aaron Lerner : "PM Sharon handled a
difficult challenge: He wanted to
continue with his team's mud-slinging approach towards those engaged in
non-violent protest against the disengagement, but IDF Chief-of-Staff Halutz
briefed the ministers that "there is opposition at the entrances to communities,
it is non-violent and is mainly by young people who are not residents of Gush
Katif".
So here is how Prime Minister Sharon handled the challenge of wanting to trash
non-violent activity: "When we see the actions carried out by youths, who did
not come of their own accord, rather they were organized and sent by elements
which repeat their non-involvement in violent activities - anyone who wants to
live in a state where things are managed in such a way can ignore the situation.
I do not intend to live in such a fashion, I see it as our responsibility to
ensure that that life in Israel is carried on without violence, without
coercion and without incitement, but in a manner acceptable in democratic
countries." It should be noted that the English is a reasonable translation of

Ezra tells Yesha it must accept law after call to reach Kissufim crossing. Public Security Minister Gideon Ezra told the Yesha Council of settlers on Thursday, that it is not the sovereign power in Israel, and added that while he values the Yesha leaders, they must know their place. The public security minister is calling on them to accept the law, because if everyone acts as they see fit, the state would deteriorate. The minister countered the Yesha Council call to confront soldiers and police, and to reach the Kissufim crossing to Gush Katif in any way possible.
Thousands of non-resident youths will get chance to leave before pullout. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz believes that during the first couple of days of the evacuation process, most Gaza residents will leave without resistance. Mofaz said on Thursday that the IDF and police will help the evacuees as much as possible. The defense minister said the thousands of youths who have crossed into Gush Katif will be given a chance to leave. Mofaz said he differentiates between those youths who are breaking the law, and Gush Katif residents. Defense Minister Mofaz repeated that the IDF is also ready on the Palestinian front to prevent attacks. Mofaz and Public Security Minister Ezra toured Kibbutz Kerem Shalom on Thursday morning to witness a final army and police exercise in advance of the disengagement. They watched as various potential scenarios were played out: burning tires, a siege on a synagogue, protestors going up on roofs, resistance with the use of chains, and blocking roads. The defense minister voiced the hope that the security forces would not be confronted with such scenarios.

Hamas not to disarm after Gaza pullout
Hamas will not surrender its weapons to the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip after Israel's pullout from the territory, one of the movement's top leaders has said.
Photo: A
l-Zahar contends that Hamas is a legitimate security tool."This army will continue to defend our homeland as long as one inch of Palestine remains occupied," Mahmoud al-Zahar told reporters on Friday, after attending a training session of Hamas's military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades. "It is criminal to claim that there is only one weapon," al-Zahar said in reference to declarations by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas insisting that the Palestinian Authority was the only legitimate security tool. During a keynote speech to the Palestinian parliament earlier this week, Abbas urged all armed groups to end their rocket attacks on Israeli targets, as part of a larger appeal for calm during the pullout. Abbas met al-Zahar and Hamas's two other top Gaza leaders on Tuesday in a bid to ensure the group's fighters would not seek to scupper the historic pullout of Israeli troops and settlers. Hamas, the group behind the majority of anti-Israeli attacks during the five-year uprising or intifada, says the rocket attacks were instrumental in persuading Israel to leave Gaza after a 38-year occupation.

obtain Iranian agreement to extradite Saudi nationals deemed as
fugitives by Riyad. They said hundreds of Saudi nationals, most of
them Al Qaida operatives, were believed to have received haven in
Iran. On July 25, the Saudi Cabinet approved the start of
