HEBRAIC ART AND CULTURE

INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE ISRAELI AND HEBRAIC ART. HOW TO DEFINE JEWISH ART?  WHO IS AND WHO IS NOT A JEWISH ARTIST? By Maximillien de Lafayette. Defining what  Jewish art is and who is a Jewish artist is more problematic and subjective than defining art itself. Jewish artists from all eras and various nations contributed ad infinitum to various and multiple schools, styles, genres and aspects of classical, abstract and modern art.  In many instances, no Judaic or Hebraic artistic creativity was ever associated with the nature, the theme and message of their work. Add to the fact that, many non Jewish artists from all centuries mirrored and depicted memorable events from the history of Israel, the Bible and modern Jewish conflicts around the globe...Read the full article

Steinberger Sukkah Returned to Public View After Two-Year Conservation
Early 20th Century Hand-painted Sukkah Cover by Hungarian Artist Aryeh Steinberger

After a two-year absence, the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust has reinstalled the beautiful and unusual Steinberger Sukkah Panel just in time for the holiday of Sukkot in October. This unique work of art was created by Aryeh Steinberger to adorn his family sukkah in Budapest, and hidden away for safekeeping during the Holocaust. The sukkah was on display in the Museum's permanent exhibition starting in 1997.  It was taken down in early 2003 for extensive conservation work. The Steinberger Sukkah is on loan to the Museum from the Lindenblatt family, descendents of Steinberger. "We are delighted to have the Sukkah lining on display again," said Dr. David G. Marwell, the Museum's Director.  "It is rare that you come across an artifact that is both historically meaningful and esthetically beautiful.  Its vibrant colors draw you in, and its incredible story keeps you there looking for more." The Steinberger Sukkah is unlike most sukkah linings you will see.  It is a hand-painted canvas depicting everyday life in Hungary alongside images of biblical events, the cycle of Jewish holidays, and the artist's idealized view of Jerusalem. The vibrant and detailed imagery surrounds panels inscribed with prayers recited during Sukkot and text from the Mishnah tractate sukkah.  Steinberger worked on this project over a period of two decades starting in the 1920s. As time passed, he replaced and refined some of its elements including his signature panel, which consisted of a picture of a lion (the Hebrew word for lion is Aryeh, the artist's first name).  Steinberger died peacefully in 1942, long before the Germans entered Hungary. In 1944, as the Nazis prepared to invade, Steinberger's grandson Andor was sent to bury the sukkah lining in the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest for safekeeping. Another of Steinberger's grandchildren, Piroska Lindenblatt, reclaimed the Sukkah lining following the war.  Piroska kept the canvas in her home until 1956 when, after multiple failed attempts, she was able to sneak it -- along with her children -- out of the country during the Hungarian Revolution against the oppressive communist rulers. She never let the canvas out of her sight.  Piroska proudly displayed her grandfather's sukkah in her Brooklyn home until her death in 1983, at which time it was passed to her son Jehuda. In 1990, a scout from the Museum learned of the sukkah from Paul Lindenblatt, Piroska's youngest son, while doing research in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

In 2003, the construction of the Museum's new Robert M. Morgenthau Wing necessitated the closure of the building for two months as the original museum and new wing were connected. This "dark period" provided an opportunity to remove the Steinberger Sukkah in order to conserve it and prepare it for ongoing display in the Museum.  The two-year conservation project sought to stabilize and clean the paint, resulting in more vibrant colors. The project also stabilized the textile itself, including taking out wrinkles and creases that could have developed into tears.  The family was initially reluctant to loan the Museum this priceless and enormously sentimental piece of their history.  However, in the end, Robert Lindenblatt said "for history, we felt it was our responsibility to show it to the world."  The Steinberger Sukkah now holds a place of honor as the centerpiece of the Museum's display on Jewish Life A Century Ago.  Since the Museum opened its doors in 1997, hundreds-of-thousands of visitors have marveled at the Steinberger Sukkah's beauty and learned from its history.  A low resolution image of the Steinberger sukkah lining along with a close up of one panel is included with this e-mail, high resolution images are available upon request. Ours to Fight For: American Jews During the Second World War

On view through December 2005 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

The inaugural exhibition for the Robert M. Morgenthau wing, Ours To Fight For: American Jews in the Second World War was named the grand-prize winner of the Excellence in Exhibition Competition at the American Association of Museums Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Citing the exhibition's use of the first-person narrative, the judges felt this approach engaged museum visitors and allowed them to make connections with the experiences of soldiers 60 years ago and troops serving today.

New York - City of Refuge, Stories from the Last 60 Years

On view through November 27, 2005  at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

More than a refuge for world Jewry, New York City has been a setting for Jewish renewal. It has played a crucial role in the development of the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees since World War II. As part of the commemoration of the 350 th anniversary of the arrival of Jews in America, the Museum of Jewish Heritage -A Living Memorial to the Holocaust is mounting a special exhibition to tell this special New York Story. New York: City of Refuge, Stories from the Last 60 Years will chronicle three distinct periods of Jewish immigration to New York: the years immediately following the Second World War, the Cold War era, and the present day. In all three periods, New York has served as a sanctuary for diverse groups of Jewish immigrants, including survivors of the Holocaust, Jews from Eastern Europe, Jews of the Middle East, and Jews of the former Soviet Union. The venue for the exhibition is perhaps the most fitting imaginable: a gallery on the edge of New York Harbor, allowing views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to become part of exhibition itself.

Through original artifacts, dramatic images, and personal testimonies, the public will connect with stories of refuge and opportunity that have helped to define New York City. All New Yorkers -Jews and non-Jews-will find connections to their own heritage, to their own stories.

Kippur: Three Weeks in October

On view through October 16, 2005 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Based on a collection of photographs of Reserve Armored Division 143 taken by journalist Uri Dan, the exhibition will tell the story of this unit during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Reserve Armored Division 143 was the first Israeli unit to cross the Suez Canal. Quotes from interviews taken with the men of the division will be used to tell this story of loss, despair, and eventual triumph.

Shalom, Y'all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South

On view Monday, June 7 to October 11  at the Museum of Jewish Heritage
Featuring original black-and-white photographs by Bill Aron

Shalom Y'all, open June 7, 2004 through September 13, 2004, tells the unique story of the Southern Jewish experience through three distinct voices: 44 black-and-white photographs, a narrative woven into descriptive captions of the photographs, and stories told by southern Jews about being Jewish in the South. It presents a multidimensional portrait of contemporary Jewish life in the Deep South as it has evolved from the early 1700s. The material is drawn from the book Shalom Y'all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South, photographs by Bill Aron with text by Vicki Reikes Fox.

She did it with tragic simplicity and eloquent silence in motion, lights, shadows and the multi-juxtaposed dimensions of her camera, capturing the moment when the  clouds and seascapes unite with the divine and the unreachable...She is a New Yorker who's camera witnessed the 9/11 tragedy, the glamour of women's motionless sensuality and the drama that ties humans with a bursting and screaming nature. She photographs femme fatales, elegant women, the clouds, inexistent people who make you think, and the infinity of nothingness. MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES: INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS

A lighting technician’s dream at London’s Albion Gallery.

Walking into the Albion Gallery, part of a new Norman Foster complex, is a little like being in an architect’s model. Identical lined-up trees and vast empty spaces create an air of anonymity. Turrell’s clean and apparently emotionless work, though, is exactly the type of art that an architect might approve of inhabiting such a model. On show is a selection of Turrell’s early light works from the 60s. Rectangles and triangles of coloured light are projected into the corners and onto the walls of a maze of rooms...Read the full article.

Eaton Place nudeNightwalk: Eva sprawlsThe Shadow of Intimacy. Bill Brandt came to London for good at the beginning of April 1934. He wanted to be English, and really belong to the fairy-tale island. This meant inventing a new identity for himself, as he turned 30, but also inventing an England that would satisfy his childhood fantasies.

CDs OF THE MONTH: Medulla by Bjork. Bjork has said she finds her best, most loved music has been the songs she was selfish in making. On her latest, the Icelandic chanteuse has cast out even the instruments. CLASSICAL MUSIC: READ THE REVIEWS

SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE. William Bolcom's ambitious setting of William Blake's complete Songs of Innocence and Experience for soloists, multiple choral forces, and orchestra occupied the composer on and off, beginning as far back as the late 1950s, with most of the work completed between 1973-74 and 1979-82. The composer's renowned eclectic bent makes itself felt in the work's nearly two-and-one-half-hour length....ANDREW MANZE: PORTRAIT. If you're already an Andrew Manze fan, you probably have most if not all of the recordings represented on this compilation (22 tracks from 11 albums, ranging from composers as well-loved as Bach and Vivaldi to the more obscure Pandolfi and Rebel). Even so, hearing these selections back-to-back is a reminder of just how dazzling he is, a virtuoso technician with a limitless imagination. With Manze, there's no need to qualify his talents (something along the lines of "well, he's quite good for one of those early music/period performance fiends"). He's not just a great Baroque violinist; he is among today's pre-eminent musicians, period.

CORELLI VIOLIN SONATE. OP5/ANDREW MANZE, RICHARD EGARR. For a large part of the 20th century violinists learned Baroque sonatas and concertos as glorified exercises (even as justification for having to practice all those scales and arpeggios!), as respected historical foundations that must be stood on and conquered, and ultimately as important landmarks on the path to the "really great" solo works ("Now, my boy, I think you're finally ready for the Mendelssohn!"). In other words, these pieces were not regarded as ends in themselves for the soloist, or certainly not as subjects for involved study.
