THE FLORADORA GIRLS

The Floradora Girls are en vogue. Three ladies take the lead: Marion Harris, Fannie Brice and Aileen Stanley.

Big Band/Swing

Big bands/Swing (1935-1947) are getting bigger and bigger. Some are huge and enormous. They incorporate jazz tunes and moods and their virtuosi soloists performed breath-taking and hot “hot” solos on their clarinets, trumpets, sax, trombones and pianos.  Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Glen Miller take the lead. Many great and famous singers make their debut; Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Frank Sinatra shine.  The World War Two is around the corner. A gallon of gasoline costs seventeen cents and The New York Times copy is two cents.  It is a confusing time for pacifists but a good time for music publishers and an elite of female singers. Bing Crosby sings his big hit “I’ll be Seeing You”,  the Andrews Sisters make money with “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”.

  Photo: Kate Smith

Kate Smith becomes a celebrity, she sings the 1917 Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” for the first time in 1938.  Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and the Mills Brothers become hot commodity. And Bob Hope is entertaining everywhere. Everybody is making money and the music business is booming. In March 1949, RCS cuts the first 7 inch 45 R.P.M. disc known for its large hole in the center. The 78 R.P.M. is almost dead. Margaret Whiting and Jimmy Wakely squeeze in the top ten with a Country/Western song “ Slippin’ Around”. The glitzy and innocent Doris Day makes her film debut. Anita O’Day is hot.

WORLD OF CABARET

AMERICAN MUSIC AND THE BIRTH OF CABARET FROM THE EARLY JAZZ ERA TO PRESENT

By Maximillien de Lafayette

Dianne Donovan, Mady Kaye, Beth Ullman. Dynamic American contemporary Cabaret performers. They represent the essence of “Torch Entertainment” at its best.

The 13 Different Kinds and Genres of Cabaret Around the World

1. The cabaret traditional intimate setting: Originated in Berlin around 1911 to entertain political figures, spies, powerful, colorful and influential shady characters, the rich and the famous. Type of Performers: Mata Hari, the Blue Angel Woman and the Dora’s style, in short, it was a heaven for “Les Femmes Fatales” of the era and women of suspense and mystery.

2. The cabaret variety show: Created by many establishments on old Paris, such as: Le Paradis Latin, Follies Bergere, Lido, Moulin Rouge, Casino de Paris, Copa Cabana and many other ritzy establishments around the globe. In the fifties and early sixties, Havana became one of the hottest cabaret destinations in the World fueled by money poured by the American and Italian Mafia. Many American and Latin artists of a high caliber performed at those establishments. As well as, artists of a mediocre quality. Some of the best were Perez Prado, Catherine Sauvage, Julie Wilson et al.

3. The cabaret extravaganza: Casino du Liban in Jounieh, Lebanon, Lido, Follies Bergeres, Moulin Rouge, the vanished golden era of Hollywood, Chicago and New York.

4. The cabaret sex revue/show: Property of the Scandinavian countries and products.

5. The cabaret nude and striptease style: Common in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, around Picadilly Circus and  Soho in England and  several spots in various districts in Paris. It has nothing to do with music quality and respectable singing repertoire. It is simply a display of naked women in stage and “engagee” off stage women who accommodate the sexual needs of clients and patrons. It originated in Europe and found its way to Asia during the second world war. Rich foreign businessmen from the West and American soldiers stationed abroad added to the prosperity and expansion of this kind of entertainment.

6. The cabaret intellectual style: Rare to find, rare to see and rare to enjoy. Some of the leaders of this genre were French performers and famous artists, singers, poets, authors, hustlers, existentialists, to name a few: Edith Piaf, Lucienne Delysle, Barbara, Gribouille, Jean Cocteau, Sacha Guitry, etc.,

7. The grand cabaret genre: Big time cabaret music, cabaret repertoire, variety of shows compromising of dance numbers, stand up comics, magic acts, big bands, a wave of artists from different destinations, countries and ethnic groups, sometimes, exotic animals and mini-acrobatic acts are presented, etc…This style died in America. A revival is en route in Las Vegas casinos. Some of the most famous performers were Luis Prima, Keely Smith, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Samy Davis Jr., Tom Jones, etc.,

8. The cabaret dinner show: Originated in Europe in Italian, German, Austrian and French small “boites-restaurants”. This genre became very common in America, particularly in suburbia. A small production and presentation of American tunes and songs from various eras and classical Broadway shows, productions and musical scores. Local or out of state performers take part in this production. Not a big scale business but good enough to entertain the clientele.

9. The Marlene Dietrich (Blue Angel)/Mata Hari style: The Ultimate form of traditional cabaret dressed with the bizarre, the mysterious, the risqué, the enigma, …Well, let your imagination go wild. It is gone. Adios baby! Your money is safe!

10. The Upper/ High Class Middle Eastern/Near Eastern Cabaret: Famous belly dancers (Samia Jamal, Tahia Karioka, Mouhtaram Noor), an avalanche of famous singers, radio, motion pictures, stage and TV personalities, comics, stage magicians, usually a good pure ethnic-folk or

contempo band of 7 to 8 musicians with Oud (Arab guitar), kanoun (Similar the American Country Music flat guitar with Hawaii sounds). No intimacy whatsoever. Usually loud and very noisy. Give the men one more drink, and Boom Kataboum, a revolution will start all over again!!

Photo: Mata Hari

11. The Low-Class Middle Eastern/Near Eastern Cabaret:  Forget it! Spread like rotten mushrooms and tortillas in Lebanon, Greece, Turkey

12. The Cabaret Concert Hall: Majestic and classy. It represents the highest level of musical repertoire quality. High society, royalty, well to do people, intellectuals as well as regular folks attend these productions. Ironically, burlesques and Vaudeville paved the way for the American Cabaret Concert Hall genre. Some of the most illustrious artists belonging to this category are: Lorna Dallas, Mina, Andrea Marcovicci, Amanda McBroom, Anna Bergman, Sabah, Feirouz, Ismahan, Oum Kalthoum, Farid Al Atrach, Najat Al Sagira, Anne Kerry Ford, Sarita Montiel, Amalia Rodriguez, Julio Iglessias, Francoise Hardy, Catherine Sauvage, Dalida, Petula Clark, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Keely Smith, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Al Martino, Mario Lanza, Al Jolson, Lisa Minelli, Barbra Streisand, Joan Baez, Anne Murray, Gabriella Ferri, Barbara Cook, etc.

13. Cabaret Burlesques: The Jack Ruby’s joint style. It originated in cheap  joints in Europe to entertain the low class.

EDITH PIAF

Edith Piaf who has been extensively and intensively copied by aspiring American Cabaret singers in the United States and abroad. The only contemporary American  artists/singers who could authentically project the persona of Piaf and embodies the essence of the French song were: Raquel Bitton, Nicole Martel, Sally Martin, Debbie de Coudreaux, Cindy Benson, Anna Bergman, Amanda McBroom and Andrea Marcovicci. All other performers remained icy shadows on the surface.

FAME IS NOT A PROOF OF EXCELLENCE

LACK OF FAME IS NOT SIGN OF INFERIOR ARTISTIC QUALITY

Photo: American cabaret new sensation, Ms. Sofia Laiti.

Today, we measure, assess and recognize the talent of an artist by how much she or he made money this year, the level and magnitude of her or his fame, and more particularly by the number of appearances this artist made on famous talks and vanity shows and the signed recording deals. In our unfair and troubled world, there is a considerable number of truly outstanding artists and singers who remained exclusively known to their friends, immediate surrounding and a bunch of listeners in a geographically limited area.

Yet, many of them are of a world-class talent and caliber. They did not receive the proper and most efficient guidance and or “breaking” opportunities to become famous. The lack of fame should not be considered as standard measurements for their excellence, artistic quality and talent. The world of cabaret is notoriously known for making and breaking artists for reasons we know and reasons we don’t know or we don’t want to accept. In the very remote Greek islands, you will meet the most fantastic Bouzouki players, Sertaki composers and astonishing Greek singers who have never performed on stage or seen their names in lights…or appeared on The Oprah Show, David Letterman Show or Jay Leno Show, yet, they will take you by storm and steal your heart and mind once you listen to them. They are unknown to us,  to me, to you and to the glitzy unmerciful world of entertainment. Would you, honestly, consider them as a B category artists, because we have never heard of them before? Some of them became temporarily or regionally known  (for a while, believe me!) in certain areas or part of an area in New York, California, Chicago, New Orleans, but this is not enough, because their talents were immense and bigger than the time and the area they lived in. They are true artists with a great talent who deserve more recognition and better opportunities at all levels. Some of those superb artists who have impressed me regardless of the magnitude of their fame and how many recording deals and public appearances they had, were:

   Mary Callanan              Sarah DeLima

   Pamela Anders                  Carol O’Shaughnessy

Left: Colleen Powers. A note about Diva Carol O’Shaughnessy: Carol O'Shaughnessy is recognized as one of Boston's stellar entertainers for over two decades and called "Boston's First Lady of Cabaret”. She has received numerous awards, including:  “Boston’s Entertainer of the Year Award”, the Provincetown's Hall of Fame” and the “ Entertainer of the Year Award”.

WORLD OF CABARET

AMERICAN MUSIC AND THE BIRTH OF CABARET FROM THE EARLY JAZZ ERA TO PRESENT

By Maximillien de Lafayette

Valerie Sneade        Nina Vansuch                   Sophia Bilides                    Christine Andreas                      Clarolyn Maier

Some artists made it big time because they were lucky, they grabbed an opportunity, they knew or met people who were newsmakers, they had aggressive money grabbing agents, or simply, they were there at the right time, right place and met the right people! Sometimes, our meager knowledge of world music and ethnic creativity prevent us from hearing and or learning about superb foreign artists. Some other time, our ignorance of foreign culture and foreign languages refrain us from learning and hearing about outstanding artists living and performing in distant lands. And if we are not interested in other nations’ heritage, culture, history and arts (because we do consider that our own artists, heritage, culture, and our very own music are superior and sufficient), the names of foreign highly talented artists will never flash before our eyes. Honestly, how many of us ever heard of France’s Gribouille, Barbara, Leny Escudero, Les Companions de La Chanson, Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Fernandel, Patachou? Very few, yet, they were the best of the best in the business.

How many of us ever heard about the Arab World’s leading artists such as Nour Al Houda, Bechara Wakeem, Magda, Asmahan, Sabah, Najat Al Saghira, Marie Atayah? Very few, yet, in their time, they shined bigger than the most glittering stars in the universe! How many of us, have ever heard of Italy’s greats such as Rocco Granata, Gabriella Ferri, Mina? Only those who went to Italy or lived “on the edge” in Europe would know about their great recording and astonishing successes!! Have you ever heard of Xhadjidakis, Marinella or Alecca Kanelidou of Greece? They are considered as Deities of music in the Hellenic world! And how about Amalia Rodriguez of Portugal, Carlos Gardel, the king of the tango Argentino and Perez Prado, the king of Mambo? If you are not familiar with Arabic, Portuguese, Greek and Spanish, those superstars would remain unknown to you, yet, they have sold millions and millions of records worldwide.
