Ambassador Arye Mekel greets Israel's Victims of Terror. NEW YORK- Ambassador Arye Mekel, Consul General of Israel in New York, met with 12 victims of terror on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at the Consulate General of Israel in New York. The victims are in the United States in behalf of the One Family Fund . At the meeting, Ambassador Mekel listened attentively to the experiences of each of the victims', some of whom have clearly visible scars, and are still receiving medical treatment for their injuries. In addition to the Israeli victims, Lauren Sokolow from Woodmere, Long Island, also participated in the One Family Fund event. Ms. Sokolow was injured in a terrorist attack on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem while she was visiting Israel with her family. The One Family Fund participants, who are either victims or family members of victims, are in the United States to raise money and awareness about the tragic effects of terrorism. Sarri Singer, the Director of One Family Fund’s Northeastern office, and herself a victim of terror in Israel, led the group in the US. One Family Fund was founded in September 2001 as a grassroots effort to respond to the unmet needs of victims of terror in Israel. Since its inception, One Family Fund has distributed more than 11 million dollars in various forms of financial, emotional, psychological, legal, and material assistance.

On occasion of the 120th anniversary of Portuguese savoir Aristides de Sousa Mendes’ birth, The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation hold an event to commemorate the diplomat's heroic deeds. Mrs. Sheila Fleischhacker Abranches, Sousa Mendes’ granddaughter, represented the Sousa Mendes family. The commemoration was hold in the Museum of Jewish Heritage, where the Registry Book used by Sousa Mendes for the thousands visas issued on June 17, 1940, and the pen used to enter those names, are exhibited. HADASSAH ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF MORLIE HAMMER LEVIN AS
NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.
Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, announced the
appointment of Morlie Hammer Levin as National Executive Director,
effective at the beginning of September. Levin comes to Hadassah from
a rich background in Jewish communal work, management consulting, and
policy studies. Her most recent position was Vice President, Strategic
Donor Initiatives at the Jewish Federation in Los Angeles, CA. June
Walker, National President of Hadassah, welcomed Levin by saying: "Morlie
Levin brings to Hadassah an exceptionally strong grounding in non-profit and
corporate business practices.

ISRAEL AND YAD VASHEM HONORS WERNER WILHELM VON BIEL.
Yad Vashem and the Israeli
Government honored Mr. Werner Wilhelm Von Biel, posthumously, today as
‘Righteous Among the Nations,’ for his selfless and courageous actions
saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust. The ceremony took place at
10:30am at the Consulate General of Israel in New York. Manfred
Alexander, of Kew Gardens, Queens, whom Mr. Von Biel saved during the
Holocaust, was present at the ceremony. He first brought Mr. Von
Biel’s brave action to the attention of the Israeli government in
2002. In his keynote address, Mr. Alexander told the full story of his
survival and paid tribute to his friend Mr. Von Biel for displaying an
act of “true humanity and friendship” in his efforts to hide him and save
him from the Nazis. Quoting from the diary of Anne Frank.

Israel Fund (NIF) will be speaking in Philadelphia at the Germantown Jewish
Centre on the topic of “Strengthening Israel by Protecting Her Democracy.”
The talk is free and open to the entire community. Peter Edelman teaches law
at the Georgetown University Law Center. An expert in social policy, he
served as Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services
during the Clinton administration and he is the author of Searching for
America’s Heart: RFK and the Renewal of Hope

The Museum of Jewish Heritage-A Living Memorial to the Holocaust will hold its annual Spring Women's Luncheon Benefit on this Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at The Pierre Hotel. This year's luncheon will recognize the contributions made by Jewish women in the military, and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. "ATOMIC IRAN" AUTHOR TO ADDRESS ISRAELI KNESSET. "Atomic Iran" author Dr. Jerome Corsi has accepted an invitation to address the Israeli Knesset as it weighs options for protecting the Jewish state from a potential nuclear attack by Tehran. Dr. Corsi is a Harvard PhD who founded the Iran Freedom Foundation to help promote peaceful, democratic change in the country. He is scheduled to testify next month at a two-hour hearing by the Knesset's Forum on the Middle East. "I'm going to tell the Knesset that the threat from Iran is severe," Corsi said. "The Mullahs have a secret weapons program and I believe they intend to show the world they have it by exploding a bomb over Tel Aviv."
CITY COUNCIL HONORS JCC OF GREATER CONEY ISLAND’S NONPROFIT HELPDESK AT GALA JEWISH HERITAGE CELEBRATION. As part of a gala celebration of the Jewish community’s commitment to intergenerational programming, the New York City Council paid special tribute to the Nonprofit Helpdesk, a program of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island that disseminates computer technology for the benefit of New York City’s nonprofit organizations as well as its senior and youth populations.
DR. EUGENE HABECKER LEAVING AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY TO BECOME PRESIDENT OF TAYLOR UNIVERSITY. The board of trustees of the American Bible Society (ABS) has announced that ABS President Dr. Eugene B. Habecker is leaving his post after 14 years to assume the post of president of his alma mater, Taylor University in Indiana. The school is an evangelical, independent, interdenominational Christian liberal arts college, with campuses located in Upland and Fort Wayne.

A CONCERT OF FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN ISRAEL AND FRANCE. The concert, which featured Inbal Segev (Israeli cellist), Vincent Sangaré-Balse (French pianist), Alex Fiterstein (Israeli clarinetist) and Arnaud Sussmann (French violinist), took place at the Consulate General of France located at 934 5th Ave. (between 74th and 75th St.) in New York City. National anthems opened the recital beginning with “La Marseillaise” (French) performed by Valerie MacCarthy, “Hatikvah” (Israeli) by Magda Fishman and the their joining together for a moving rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” (American). The evening continued with talents of the French and Israeli musicians performing together the compositions by French composers. In his remarks, Ambassador DeLattre stressed the strong ties between the French and the Jewish cultures. “France’s Jewish heritage is an essential component of what we French are, of our history, culture and values”
BLOOMBERG CAMPAIGN LANDS LICHTENSTEIN AS JEWISH LIAISON. The Bloomberg for Mayor campaign announced today that it has hired Mordy Lichtenstein to do outreach to Jewish and Russian communities across the Five Boroughs. A former field director for the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), Lichtenstein played a vital role in establishing the RJC as a political force in the tri-state area. JNF Launches Public Warning Against Lag Ba’Omer Bonfires
Jerusalem- Israel.Jewish National Fund issued a public warning against lighting bonfires in its forests on Lag Ba-Omer after 2,600 acres of trees were burned in forest fires in 2004. In preparation for Lag Ba-Omer, JNF reinforced its fire-fighting preparations - a high state of alert of the fire fighters, including the activation of 40 strategically located watch towers, observers and 25 all terrain fire trucks, each equipped with four firefighters assisted by ground crews.
