A Master
Plan to Defend Sderot
Let us emphasize that Sderot is in
pre-1967 Israel, well within the Green Line. It is not a "settlement",
unless one considers Tel Aviv and Haifa also to be settlements. I
hereby propose the organization of the Sderot Defense Forces (SDF).
The SDF will be a militia entirely operated by and manned by the
residents of Sderot. Its function will be to retaliate whenever Sderot
is attacked.
The SDF will be equipped with heavy artillery, tanks, rockets, jets
and a battleship. An aircraft carrier might be a nice addition down
the road, as would be heavy air bombers. Whenever Sderot is attacked,
the SDF will saturate the Gaza Strip with rockets, bombs and shells.
Israel will not be held responsible. The Israeli government can shrug
its shoulders and say: "Hey, that ain't us bombing Gaza. Any Gaza
residents getting killed or hurt from the retaliation shelling will be
the responsibility of the PLO." The SDF will not be answerable to the
Israeli government. Just like the Israeli government has washed its
hands of any responsibility for the security of Sderot, and abandoned
any military role in retaliating for attacks on Sderot, so will the
SDF announce that it is not automatically going to respond to any
calls for help from Israel, nor will it automatically support defense
efforts by Israel. A single Kassam, mortar shell, Katyusha, suicide
bomber or large rock used by the PLO or its affiliates in Gaza to
attack Sderot will result in the saturation bombing of the entire Gaza
Strip by the SDF. Ehud Olmert need not worry, though, because there
will be no Jews or Israeli soldiers there to risk getting hit or to be
blamed. If the Gaza Strip simply is emptied out of population
due to the retaliation shelling, well, that is no worse a consequence
than Sderot being emptied out as a result of Oslo cowardice and
defeatism. You might want to fax this proposal to your favorite
Israeli politician. Of course, proposals not pushed by the government
are frowned upon. Ask Minister of Education Yael ("Yuli") Tamir. She
is a Labor party hack and had been a leftist professor of education
and philosophy at Tel Aviv University. She is so extreme that even
Leonard Fein likes her. In May, Tamir announced that a top item in her
educational agenda will be to introduce brainwashing and
indoctrination in the school curriculum to persuade the children to
endorse the "contraction" plan that the new Kadima-Labor government is
peddling (Yediot Ahronot May 4). The goal of the
Labor-party-controlled Ministry of Education seems to be to turn
Israeli school children into little Pavlik Morozovs.
Who?
Pavlik Morozov, a boy who "loved communism," was hailed as the
ultimate patriot by Stalin's regime. He was a handsome 14-year-old
schoolboy who lived in a tiny Siberian village, never played truant,
always did his homework and was polite to his teachers. He loved
communism so much so that when his own father broke the law he
informed on him to the authorities. Pavlik, too, was taught in
school to support the policies of his government.

Stupid Left, Satanic Left
It is impossible to understand politics in the world today without
grasping the fundamental fact that there exist two different Lefts. I
propose that the two be referred to by everyone as the Stupid Left and
the Satanic Left.
It is impossible to understand politics in the world today without
grasping the fundamental fact that there exist two different Lefts. I
propose that the two be referred to by everyone as the Stupid Left and
the Satanic Left. The two are very different, although they work
together. People who are part of the first are simply stupid people.
People who are part of the second may in fact be quite shrewd, but are
evil and nefarious. There is no third type of leftist.
Over time, the Stupid Left has been losing its numbers, as many Stupid
Leftists either become smarter or morph into Satanic Leftists, and so
desist from being mere Stupid Leftists. So a process of selection is
occurring whereby the strength of the Satanic Left within the overall
Left grows. The anti-American demonstrations we have been witnessing
in Europe and the United States are attended by both kinds of
Leftists, although they were organized by Satanic Leftists. Both the
Stupid Left and the Satanic Left demonstrate together against the
United States, in favor of Saddam Hussein, in favor of destroying
Israel and in favor of Palestinian terrorism. But they do so for
different reasons.
The Stupid Left really thinks that if the U.S. leaves Iran alone, its
regime will refrain from developing weapons of mass destruction.
The Satanic Left supports Iraq precisely because it knows that the
Iranian regime will develop them - and will use them. The Stupid Left
is anti-American because it thinks people in America are oppressed,
poor, mistreated and that America is an evil country. The Satanic Left
is anti-American precisely because it knows the opposite is the case.
The Stupid Left hates America because it thinks America promotes evil,
oppressive regimes around the world. The Satanic Left hates America
because America gets in the way of the evil, oppressive regimes that
the Satanic Left promotes. The Stupid Left denounces capitalism and
globalization and supports communism because it really believes that
people are poor and oppressed under capitalism but free and happy
under socialism. The Satanic Left denounces capitalism and supports
communism precisely because it knows that the opposite is the case.
The Stupid Left does not know that communism produces gulags. The
Satanic Left supports communism precisely because it produces gulags
and also because the Satanic Leftists presume they will be placed in
charge of the gulags. The Stupid Left wants a Palestinian state
because it thinks that such a state will pursue peace alongside
Israel. The Satanic Left wants a Palestinian state precisely because
it knows such a state will launch a war of destruction against Israel
and endless atrocities against the Jews. The Stupid Left thinks Israel
mistreats Arabs. It does not know that Arab regimes mistreat Arabs.
The Satanic Left knows Israel does not mistreat Arabs and Arab regimes
do. It wants Israel destroyed not because it thinks Israel is unjust,
but rather because it hates Jews. The Stupid Left opposes Israeli
armed force being used to suppress terror because it thinks that
terror can be resolved through dialogue and negotiations. The Satanic
Left opposes Israeli armed force being used to suppress terror because
it supports terror against Jews.
The Stupid Left is convinced that most Arabs seek peace, are moderate
an decent people, and have a legitimate grievance against the West.
The Satanic Left supports Arab aggression and terror precisely because
it knows this is not true. The Stupid Left thinks that Palestinian
leaders and Arab nationalists are progressive and liberal. The Satanic
Left supports the same people precisely because it knows they are
fascists. The Stupid Left is under the impression that Arab states
have elections and freedom and enlightenment. The Satanic Left
supports Arab regimes because they want to destroy Israel and murder
Jews.
The Stupid Left thinks the West should not place its Arab residents
under surveillance because they are decent people and loyal to their
adopted countries. The Satanic Left opposes such surveillance because
it wants more Bin Ladens.
The Stupid Left thinks that Israeli settlements are an obstacle to
peace. The Satanic Left wants the settlers evicted or killed because
they are an obstacle to the Palestinians destroying Israel. The Stupid
Left thinks the Middle East conflict is about Arab human rights. The
Satanic Left knows the Middle East conflict is about suppressing
Jewish human rights. They support this suppression. The Stupid Left
thinks the Middle East conflict is about land and borders. The Satanic
Left knows it is about Israel`s existence. The Stupid Left thinks
Israel is a discriminatory, apartheid country. The Satanic Left wants
Israel destroyed so that the Arabs can impose an apartheid regime
directed against the Jews and any other non-Moslems. The Stupid Left
believes it is trying to reform and change America. The Satanic Left
wants to destroy America. The Stupid Left thinks socialism works. The
Satanic Left wants socialism because it knows it does not. The Stupid
Left thinks it is opposing racism. The Stupid Left thinks
Zionism is a form of racism. The Satanic Left supports anti-Zionism
precisely because it is a form of anti-Semitism. The Stupid Left
chooses its political positions on the basis of the desire by leftists
to make their mommies and daddies mad. So does the Satanic Left, but
they really hate their parents. The Stupid Left says it favors
equality. The Satanic Left favors transferring power to itself so that
it can oppress others. The Stupid Left supports Marxist groups all
over the world because it thinks these are non-violent and favor
pluralism. The Satanic Left supports them because they know these are
violent and totalitarian. The Stupid Left thinks animals should be
treated like humans. The Satanic Left thinks humans should be treated
like animals.
The Stupid Left wants socialism because it thinks that people will not
have to work under socialism and because it thinks that leftists will
have a lot of friends under socialism. The Satanic Left wants
socialism because Satanic Leftists will not have to work under
socialism while they turn everyone else into slaves, and because
they`ll get to shoot their friends.
Academic
Attack on Israel's Military
In the campaign in the UK to organize an academic boycott of Israeli
universities, led by the British Association of University Teachers (AUT),
it turned out that a fanatic anti-Israel faculty member at an Israeli
University, Ilan Pappe from the University of Haifa, was the driving
force, seeking to create a boycott of his own university. That boycott
campaign ultimately fizzled and failed. But the attempts by radical
anti-Israel faculty members in Israel to promote attacks on their own
country continue. Recent campaigns are in some ways more outrageous
and far worse than the earlier boycott initiative. The newest
campaigns are directed against individual Israelis in their private
capacity and are being promoted by some of the most openly
anti-Semitic of Israel's academic extremists.
These campaigns are based upon demonizing and persecuting individual
Israeli military officers as "war criminals" in European courts. As
you may recall, a few months ago, an Israeli army officer named Doron
Almog was forced to cancel a private visit to the UK because some
anti-Israel activists, including some leftist ex-Israelis, had
petitioned a British
court to issue an arrest against the former head of Israel's Southern
Command. One of those seeking the prosecution in Britain of Almog was
a fanatic lawyer named David Machower, representing a Palestinian
pro-terror radical group. Machover was also one of the people in
Britain promoting the campaign to boycott Israeli universities.
Machover's client, the "Palestinian Center for Human Rights," is a
politicized nongovernmental organization (NGO). The organization
refuses to condemn Palestinian suicide terrorism against Israeli
civilians.
Among Almog's most famous "war crimes" was his role in the
Entebberescue of hundreds of hostages hijacked by Palestinian
terrorists to Uganda in 1976. He was the first Israeli para-reconnaissance
commander to land on the runway at Entebbe, marking it for incoming
Israeli airplanes and leading the capture of the airfield's control
tower in the stunning rescue operation of 1976. He also participated
in the clandestine airlift of some 6,000 black Jews from Ethiopia to
Israel in the Eighties.
Was Almog a murderous monster, as the British anti-Semites painted
him?
Hardly! In a recent interview he was asked about the greatest
challenge in his career and he said it was caring for his autistic
son. "Taking care of my boy - that's the most immense challenge I've
ever faced," said Almog, watching his son, Eran, frolic in a toddler's
wading pool. Eran is 20. He wears diapers, chews only baby food and
cannot speak. Almog is active in groups helping the retarded. A
local Israeli far-left seditious group named Yesh Gvul, specializing
in organizing mutiny and insurrection among Israeli soldiers, was also
involved in the campaign of demonization against Almog. The latest
victim of a campaign of leftist vilification is an Israeli army
officer named Aviv Kochavi. He was scheduled to begin studies in
Britain this summer as a private person at the Royal College of
Defense Studies. He has now been forced to cancel his planned trip to
the United Kingdom after the Israeli Military Advocate's Office
instructed that he refrain from commencing studies, fearing that he
would be arrested on trumped-up charges of "war crimes." Kochavi has
been serving as the commander of the Israel Defense Forces division
along the Gaza border.
Like the earlier campaign in Britain to organize a boycott of Israeli
universities, this personal campaign against Kochavi is the scurrilous
initiative of a fanatic anti-Israel leftist faculty member at an
Israeli university. Kochavi is the victim of a venomous vendetta and
personal defamatory attack by one Neve Gordon, a radical lecturer in
the Department of Political Science at Ben Gurion University. Gordon
has conducted a campaign of slander, defilement, vilification and
defamation against Kochavi for years. Beginning in 2002, Gordon
published an article, reprinted in numerous anti-Semitic and communist
web sites around the world, declaring Kochavi (back then still a
colonel) to be a "war criminal." The article was published on dozens
of web sites and in magazines, and in several languages, including
Hebrew, English, Arabic, German and Italian. It not only personally
smeared Kochavi falsely, it could reasonably be interpreted to have
been an attempt to motivate acts of violence against Kochavi, perhaps
even incitement to murder. At the very least, it was a clear attempt
to get Kochavi indicted before an overseas courts, such as the
International Court of Justice in the Hague or a court in the UK, on
the weight of Gordon's trumped-up charges. Gordon signs his piece
smearing Kochavi while openly listing his affiliation with Ben-Gurion
University, in violation of the University's instructions and
prohibitions on such behavior. In his article, Gordon declares that
Kochavi (Gordon misspells the name Kohavi) committed atrocities and
war crimes against innocent Palestinian civilians, having given
direct, personal commands to his troops to do these acts. Gordon
lists the supposed use of Palestinians as human shields by the
soldiers as one "crime".
Now, it goes without saying that this is all Gordon's fabrication.
There have been no charges at all filed against Kochavi for his
behavior in the military or anywhere else. In the battle in which
Gordon thinks Kochavi misbehaved, Kochavi's troops were hunting for
bands of vicious terrorists, including suicide bombers, who had killed
hundreds of Israelis, a carnage that does not interest Gordon at all
in the article. Gordon accuses Kochavi of ordering assorted "human
rights violations". Gordon's claim that Kochavi ordered troops to
utilize Palestinian civilians as human shields is not only
preposterous, but a downright blood libel, and has been investigated
and dismissed as fantasy by the Israeli authorities. Gordon was hired
by Ben Gurion University back when Avishay Braverman, currently the
economic trigger man for the Israeli Labor Party, was running the
university. Under Braverman's leadership, Ben Gurion University was
filled with anti-Israel leftist faculty members and "Post-Zionists",
evidently as Braverman's intentional policy. The Department of
Political Science at BGU was so uniformly leftist and anti-Israel that
it adopted a policy under which no non-leftist would be permitted to
teach there. The single non-leftist in the department was dismissed
for incorrect thinking. Some have characterized Ben Gurion University
in the Braverman era as the "Bir Zeit (radical Palestinian college) of
the Negev". Gordon is so extremist that he has repeatedly endorsed and
praised the writings of Norman Finkelstein, considered by the
Anti-Defamation League to be an open Holocaust denier. Gordon compared
pro-terror Neo-Nazi Finkelstein ethically to the Prophets in the
Bible. Gordon has built an academic career in large part on his
Bash-Israel writings, including articles claiming Israel is a
terrorist state. He is a regular columnist for the anti-Semitic web
magazine Counterpunch and his publicist writings are so venomously
anti-Israel that they have been reprinted on the web site of
Canada-deported nazi Ernst Zundel. Gordon was arrested for interfering
with Israeli anti-terror military operations and served as a "human
shield" to prevent the arrest of wanted terrorists being hidden in
Arafat's Ramallah headquarters.
So why is an Israeli military hero being victimized by a fanatic
anti-Israel leftist employed at an Israeli taxpayer-financed
university? If you would like to ask the new President of Ben Gurion
University that question, contact Prof. Rivka Carmi at
rcarmi@bgumail.bgu.ac.il; Fax:

The
Political Lessons of Purim
Just before Purim it is traditional for Jews to read as the Haftara
portion in synagogues the section of the First Book of Samuel in which
King Saul is stripped of his kingdom and office. The context is that
Haman, the villain of Purim, is thought to be descendent from Agog,
the evil king of the Amalekites, captured by King Saul. The Biblical
injunction to "Remember what Amalek did to you" is considered
particularly timely in the days of proximity to Purim.
This year it occurred to me that there are important political
messages in this segment of the Book of Samuel. Just to remind you of
the context, the Bible orders Jews to annihilate the Amalekites,
including their animals. But it turns out that the Israelites, with
the connivance of King Saul, have disobeyed. They have captured
animals from the Amalekite herds and retained them, and King Saul has
captured the evil King of the Amalekites, Agog, but has not slain him.
The Bible uses an interesting term for the failure to kill Agog and
the animals. The precise words for the failure in the Biblical Hebrew
arevariations on the word "Chamal", which means "have mercy upon",
usually translated into English in this segment as "spared". King Saul
tells the Prophet Samuel that the Israelites defied instructions and
illicitly "took mercy" upon the animal booty they had been ordered to
destroy and also
"took mercy" upon the Amalekite King.
The Prophet Samuel goes into a rage, declares that Saul is hereby
stripped of his Kingship, orders the animals killed, and then Samuel
himself slits the throat of King Agog with his own hand. So where are
the political lessons? First, it is that people tend to misrepresent
their own selfishness and grasping materialism as "compassion";
affectations and posturings of compassion are often little more than
excuses for illicit selfishness. That is precisely what enraged Samuel
and is denounced in such harsh terms by the words of the Bible.
Second, unjustified mercy is not only out of place but it is among the
worst crimes one can commit. Even a king who commits it is considered
a villain beyond redemption and beyond the ability to repent. Let us
note that "real politik" dominates the Bible, which recognizes that
kings may need to kill people to maintain their power and public
order. The Bible is willing to make its peace with such killing - but
not with unjustified mercy.
Agog is a terrorist. He is not entitled to mercy, and showing him
mercy is an unforgivable crime. Saul is stripped of his kingdom, which
passes to David. Samuel showed the proper way to deal with captured
terrorists when he cut Agog''s throat.
With Purim coming this week, the political lessons of Purim were never
more timely and relevant.
Putting The
Ax To The Tree-Chopping Canard
The mainstream
media have long sought to demonize Jewish settlers in the West Bank
and the Gaza Strip, painting them as violent destructive bullies. The
focus of this campaign in the past few months has been on the supposed
conspiracy by West Bank settlers to chop down trees owned by
Palestinians. Hundreds of "news stories" have cited "reports" .
invariably attributed to spokespersons for Palestinian Arabs or the
PLO . claiming that Jewish settlers are sabotaging and destroying Arab
trees in the West Bank. But are they?
The simple
answer is that the accusations appear to be entirely baseless. It
would be hard to find another set of such baseless rumors turned into
"news." Not a single Israeli settler has been convicted of damaging
Arab trees, and several far more plausible explanations for the
cutting of the trees have been provided. Moreover, the accusers
themselves have a track record of refusing to speak out against the
intentional environmental terrorism of Palestinian and Israeli Arabs,
who torch forests in Israel several times each year.
Some of the
media "news" stories about alleged destruction of Palestinian trees
are coming from the usual anti Israel propagandists. Israeli soldiers
and settlers have cut down 18,339 trees, according to the Palestinian
Agriculture Ministry's Olive Department. This is the Palestinian
Authority that has never been able to locate the same Hamas terror
leaders that CNN and the BBC have no trouble locating and
interviewing. Similar allegations of tree destruction by settlers have
been carried by legitimate mainstream media, including Reuters, AP,
and CNN. An Israeli leftist "human rights" group, Yesh Din, has
documented 20 instances between March and December 2005 in which
Palestinian olive groves and agricultural property were sabotaged and
has filed "complaints" in those cases. But none of these has produced
a single conviction of a settler.
West Bank
settler leaders have consistently denied that Jews are running about
chopping down Palestinian trees. In fact, many settlers are religious,
and wanton destruction of trees . even trees belonging to one's
enemies . is explicitly prohibited in the Torah. One anti-Zionist
Reform rabbi has led a private crusade against settlers for allegedly
cutting down trees. But this fellow has also been convicted in an
Israeli court of interfering with Israeli anti-terror military
operations and is associated with the "anarchists" who have been
vandalizing Israel's security wall and attacking soldiers, so he is
hardly a credible source. (When settler leaders denied his charges, he
was invited to take a lie detector test. He refused.) A small number
of Palestinian trees have been cut down by the Israeli army because
they were being used by Palestinian terrorists to snipe at Jewish
settlements and outposts. For example, after eleven Jews from the
settlement of Itamar were murdered by Palestinians, some trees along
the perimeter were chopped down legally for fear of their use by
terrorists.
The anti-Zionist
Haaretz reporter Amira Hass has claimed that settlers are behind the
vandalized trees. But in June 2001 the Jerusalem District Court
ordered Haaretz and Hass to pay 250,000 shekels (about $80,000) for
slandering the Jewish community of Hebron, due to similar baseless
charges. Judge Rachel Shalev-Gartel concluded in favor of the Hebron
residents, ruling that Hass's report damaged the community's
reputation. While numerous police investigations were launched on the
basis of allegations that Jews were vandalizing Palestinian trees, no
one has been convicted and most of the cases were dismissed. On the
other hand, there have been several reports and accusations that trees
have been intentionally destroyed by local Jewish leftists as part of
a campaign to make the settlers look responsible. The accusations
against the settlers have been refuted at length on a new website
devoted to fighting what it calls the "SDL: Settler Defamation
League," by which the site operators mean liberal and leftist groups
demonizing settlers A widely published AP photo of an Arab woman
weeping and embracing an allegedly chopped-down tree (similar photos
were taken by Reuters, AFP, and others) shows that the trunk is
intact, and that only the top branches are cut off . as if it had been
purposely pruned. In fact, the Haifa-based Land of Israel Task Force
says that this is exactly what happened. There have been reports of
damage to the trees from their tops and not from near their roots,
which, according to the secretary of nearby Moshav Maon, might be
designed to allow the owners to collect compensation for
self-inflicted "damages" that do not actually kill the tree. The
police have indeed confirmed that they were cut from above and not at
the roots.
"The
left-wingers and Arabs pulled the same trick last year," Task Force
head Aviad Visuly said, "and using the same method." Photos of the
trees show that the branches were sawed off in a manner beneficial to
the trees. The Israeli government has started paying compensation to
Palestinians who claim their trees were vandalized. So the destruction
of the trees might well be the unintentional result of this
"subsidization" of chain sawing, as Palestinians find a new source of
income from the foolish Israeli government: money earned when they cut
their own trees and blame it all on the Jews in order to get cash. The
most persuasive explanation for the tree-cutting is a rather mundane
one: The trees are simply being cut for firewood, thanks to high
energy prices this winter. A reason to suspect that this is what is
really going on is that trees throughout northern Israel are also
being cut down this winter. Over 15 acres of pine and oak trees in the
Galilee have been cut down by chainsaw in recent months. Others were
cut down in the predominantly Arab Wadi Ara area and elsewhere.
Israelis, mainly Arabs, seem to be cutting the trees to use for
heating. The Israeli media have all but ignored the cutting of trees
in the Galilee and northern Israel, yet every cut tree in the West
Bank gets a banner headline and forms the basis for a new media
slander against Jewish settlers. While the imaginary destruction of
trees by settlers has by now been reported in countless newspapers and
all over the Internet, few of the stories have mentioned the many
incidents of environmental terrorism against Israel by Palestinian and
Israeli Arabs. In recent years dozens of Israeli forest fires, some
quite large, were set intentionally by Arabs for political reasons.
The evidence is overwhelming that these are deliberate acts of
political sabotage and quite a few Arab arsonists have been
apprehended.
Israeli police
have caught dozens of Palestinians and Israeli Arabs in the act of
setting fires, while other Arabs confessed to arson after arrest. Some
fires followed specific calls by Arab terrorists to torch forests. A
leaflet issued by the intifada's "underground leadership" called for
''the destruction and burning of the enemy's properties, industry and
agriculture.'' The Israeli Left and its amen chorus in the
international media will continue to denounce Jewish "settlers" for
imaginary environmental sabotage while ignoring the long track record
of Arab environmental terrorism. These are the same caring liberals
and compassionate environmentally concerned leftists who never quite
get around to denouncing Palestinian suicide bombers and other mass
murderers of Jews, yet cry their eyes out over "vandalized"
Palestinian trees that most likely were cut down by Palestinians
themselves for use as firewood.

The Communist "Jewish Arab" Professor of
Tel Aviv University
Tel Aviv University is
crawling with anti-Israel "Post-Zionist" professors and with openly
communist faculty members. It would be hard to pinpoint the very
worst and most outrageous of these, but Yehouda Shenhav is surely a
serious contender.
Shenhav is
Associate Professor and past department chairman of
sociology
at
Tel
Aviv
University He was born
Yehouda Shaharabani to Iraqi parents who had immigrated as refugees
to
Israel, and
later changed his name to a less obviously Oriental one.
He teaches Marxism and
anti-Zionism
to
Tel
Aviv
University
students and he edits the hardcore Marxist pseudo-academic Israeli
journal calling itself "Theory
and Criticism." It
publishes anti-Israel propaganda and boilerplate Marxism (in
academic Newspeak, "critical" means Marxist). "Theory
and Criticism"
was founded in 1990 by a gaggle of communists,
Arabs and far-leftist anti-Zionists in
Israel.
Shenhav also sits on the board of
another Marxist anti-Israel
"journal" published
by extremists at
Israel's
Ben-Gurion
University.
Shenhav was a visiting faculty
member at
Columbia
University when
the extremists at Edward Said's campus were turning it into an
anti-Jewish madrassah. Unsurprisingly, Shenhav did not speak
out against the rising campus anti-Semitism there nor denounce the
academic pogromchiki. Instead,
Shenhav attended
leftist
antiwar events throughout the region, starring
Columbia faculty and
others opposed to the American war against Iraqi Baathism and
Islamist terrorism. At these,
Shenhav
compared the war in
Iraq to "Israeli
acts of aggression in the
West Bank," calling them "acts of
colonialism" led by "crude military men." Collecting his
taxpayer-financed salary at
Tel
Aviv
University has
never struck him as an immoral act of oppression and colonialism.
Shenhav is a "critical" part
of the leftist junta that has taken over a one-time serious Israeli
think tank, the
Van Leer Institute in
Jerusalem, turning
it into a little taxpayer-supported gulag of anti-Jewish Marxist
propaganda and activism. He is one of the charter members of a
far-leftist group of Oriental
Jews (those whose
families immigrated to
Israel from
Islamic countries) calling itself the "Mizrahi
Democratic Rainbow Coalition".
The group does not publish membership rolls but it is unlikely that
its entire membership could fill all the seats on a bus, and
probably not even a park bench. While pretending to be a lobby
group for underprivileged Oriental Jews in
Israel, the
"Rainbow Coalition" spends most of its time promoting the Communist
Party's formula for ending "occupation" and bringing peace to a
future
Middle East that evidently will not
contain a Jewish state. The "Rainbow" is one of the anti-Jewish
Israeli groups celebrated by the
Marxists at Z magazine,
Noam Chomsky's favorite stomping ground. While
having a picayune membership,
the "Rainbow" nevertheless is awash in funds it gets from the
seditious
New Israel Fund
and similar foreign groups.
Shenhav is clearly the star of
the "Rainbow
Coalition" web site,
which is crouded with pieces by anti-Israel writers, including
pro-terror Stanford professor
Joel Beinin,
"Professor" Smadar Lavie, a feminist extremist anti-Zionist who is
not a professor at all, and even a
Bash-Israel article by
UFO crackpot conspiracist
Barry Chamish!
The web site publishes articles endorsing the campaign by European
anti-Semites to boycott Israeli universities.
More generally, Yehousa
Shenhav is
among the better-known
of
Israel's
anti-Israel leftist academic extremists. He signs many of those
anti-Israel petitions, collected regularly by Israeli academic
leftists,
including one endorsing
the Jewish leftist woman arrested for helping her Palestinian
boyfriend plan terror bombings, and another proposing
international intervention to
end Israeli sovereignty.
Shenhav's main "academic thesis" has long been the claim that
Oriental/Sephardic Jews who came to
Israel from
Arab countries are in fact Arabs of the Mosaic persuasion,
Arabs of the Jewish faith.
He insists that their national identity is determined, like
throughout the West, by language, whereas anyone with the
slightest familiarity with the
Middle East knows that nationality
groups there are defined primarily by religious identity. (That is
why secular Jews who do not practice Judaism are still Jews.) In
trying to stake out for himself Marxist "multiculturalism" as his
cosmopolitan watering hole, Shenhav in fact shows he is a victim of
his own Western provinciality, lacking any understanding of so basic
a fact of life!
While a Sephardic (Oriental
Jewish) chauvinist himself, Shenhav's "Jewish Arabs thesis" is a
purposeful and egregious misapplication of the modern European
Jewish liberal posturing, designed to make Jews more accepted by
claiming to be Germans (or Hungarians, or whatever) of the Jewish
religion, and misapplying it in a tendentious manner to Jews from
Arab countries. Arabic-speaking Jews are Jews, and not Arabs, just
as Hebrew-speaking Arabs are still Arabs. Shenhav might be able to
find perhaps 20 Sephardic Jews worldwide who agree with his "Jewish
Arabs thesis", holding that they are Arabs of the Jewish religion,
and I would not be surprised if they all turned out to be
communists.
Shenhav has
promoted his view
that Oriental Jews are Arabs in numerous articles and in a recent
book: "The Arab Jews: Nationality, Religion and Ethnicity",
which got
raving reviews from Arab
extremists and
from PLO front
groups. I keep waiting for him to approach some Sephardic toughs
from some gang in a working-class Israeli neighborhood or
development town and then for him to explain to them that they are
really Jewish Arabs. It should be fun picking up the pieces.
Shenhav considers
Zionism to be a form
of
colonialism.
His writings are carried with affection by Al-Jazeera and
by the web site of the anti-Semitic pseudo-Jewish cult Neturei
Karta.
Shenhav is celebrated
on
PLO propaganda web
sites and has been at the forefront of those leftists
OPPOSING the
idea of conditioning any Israeli compensation,
reparations, or financial tribute to the "Palestinians" on
offsetting reparations paid to Jewish refugees from the Arab
countries (or to their children).
Shenhav has long argued that
Oriental Jews and Palestinians need to unite to fight Zionism, that
old "common cause" of the communist party in "Palestine"
from the 1920s onward. Indeed, Oriental Jews and Palestinians are,
in his view, two wings of the same struggle in absolutely
everything
except
Oriental Jews getting compensation from Arabs.
As the child of immigrants to Israel from Iraq, Shenhav wants his
own family and those of all other Jewish refugees from Arab
countries to be denied their due rights to compensation for property
stolen from them, while at the same time he endorses unlimited
rights to "compensation" for Palestinians and even their "right of
return" to Israeli territory AFTER a Palestinian state is
created. This is all the moral equivalent of someone insisting
that Germans have the right to compensation for losses during World
War II while neither Jews nor Czechs do. Shenhav has been denounced
by "Justice for Jews from Arab Countries" and similar pro-Sephardic
groups.
While a prominent
Tel
Aviv
University
professor, Shenhav has a long track record of promoting crackpot and
lunatic "theories" about a variety of matters. He has
promoted the long-discredited
conspiracist "theory" holding that Yemenite Jewish children from
families who came to
Israel
in its early years were "kidnapped" and surreptitiously handed over
for adoption to European Jews. Not a shred of evidence that any
such "kidnappings" took place has ever surfaced, including via DNA
tests. This makes Shenhav the academic equivalent of a UFO
conspiracist.
Shenhav's latest
Cause Célèbre is the struggle against
"neo-liberalism". Those of you living in the real world – meaning
outside of campuses - might be confused by that terminology. As you
know, back in the 19th century liberalism used to mean
free markets, democracy, and the right to pursue equal opportunity.
By the 1960s, American "liberalism" had come to mean the very
opposite of traditional liberalism, while the banners of 19th
century liberalism had been adopted by American conservatives. Then
the Far Left in recent years adopted "neo-liberalism" as its
favorite nonsense term, and its main political crusade today is
directed toward attacking what it calls - at one and the same time -
"neo-liberalism" and "neo-conservatives". To paraphrase George
Orwell, some ideas are so stupid that one can only learn about them
from professors.
Shenhav is part of that
crusade. What he and his ilk really mean by "neo-liberalism" is
economic freedom. They may not understand first-year economics but
certainly they know that economic freedom is evil and must be
suppressed at all costs. Writing in Haaretz, March 22,
2006, Shenhav declares that "neo-liberalism" is a "destructive"
form of "religious-like fundamentalism," a "new form of global
imperialism controlled by multinational corporations," which develop
"anti-democratic
styles of management,
laws, justice and morality," all designed to oppress the poor
workers. He
has said, "Patriotism
and national solidarity are eroded from below by social injustice,
and from above by globalization."
Shenhav, who could probably
not pass a spot quiz in any Principles of Economics course,
pronounces sociological pontifications on how he thinks markets
operate, recites long-discredited Marxist "theories," all the while
singing sycophantic praises of the recent book "A
Brief History of Neoliberalism"
by
David Harvey.
His guru Harvey is a Professor of
Anthropology at the
Graduate
Center of the
City University of New York and a far-leftist moonbat,
someone who writes books full of Newspeak about the "Conditions of
Postmodernity" (another favorite leftist nonsense word) and
"imperialism."
For Shenhav and the rest of
the cadre of Marxists in the sociology and political science
departments at
Tel
Aviv
University, the
solution to "neoliberalism" is the same as the solution to the
problems of the Palestinians and the "Jewish Arabs". It is to
convert the Middle East, Western Europe and North America into large
communist gulags, modeled upon
Belarus and
similar progressive egalitarian societies.
