FANCY LIVING MAGAZINE. NOV. 2005. P.94

THOSE STARS LOOK TERRIBLE!!                                                                         THE BLOODIEST AWFUL GOWNS AND DRESSES OF THE STARS. Cont'd.

Photos from L to R: #1. Shania Twain: It's been a tough year for many of us, but Shania Twain just couldn't seem to afford a top big enough to contain her bra.  At VH1's Big in 2003 Awards, the country crooner performed in a silky bronze tracksuit, sans shirt, allowing her leopard-print bra to breathe freely beneath the unzipped jacket. She shared the same leopard-print bra with her fans at the Country Music Awards earlier in the year, exposing it beneath a low-cut, black halter top. For the Superbowl, Twain took to the field in a diamond-laden brassiere, beneath a long silver coat, paired with hot pants. On stage at the American Music Awards, the exposed lingerie was gold. Mercifully, on the red carpet at the AMAs, Twain decided to cover her cleavage. Doing so, however, involved a Givenchy turtleneck minidress, strapped on with rhinestone buckles and accessorized with a slashed chiffon train and thigh-high lace-up boots. The look left us all musing: Maybe the ubiquitous bra is better?

#2. Paula Abdul: This American Idol icon may have worn a tiara to the Emmys this year, but she's no royalty when it comes to fashion. Overdone seemed to be Abdul's M.O. in 2003. Most notably, the infamous Emmys outfit included not only the tiara (complete with beehive hairdo), but a matching choker, a capelet and a stole. Perhaps she thought she was headed to the prom? That confusion might also explain her ensemble at the Teen Choice Awards. Apparently compelled to dress like an adolescent herself for the event, 41-year-old Abdul donned a baby blue and yellow polka-dotted flounced minidress.  At the Soul Train Awards, she turned from sugary sweet to sexy in a dare-to-bare sheer lace bustier top, lace-up stiletto boots and ruched capri pants. More conservative, but equally excessive, was the outfit she threw together for the opening of the Donald Pliner store in L.A.: a silk scarf top, oversized jacket, pegged black slacks, pumps and red purse were topped off by a broad-brimmed felt fedora. In 2004, Paula, remember the old adage: Take off one thing -- or in your case, three -- before you leave the house.  #3. Alicia Keys: "Think 4 Urself" read Alica Keys's bare lower back at the Grammys this year ---- and the songstress certainly did all yearlong, at least when it came to fashion. The results were not always winners, however. There was the orange leather Eastern-themed pantsuit, the hooded poncho and, of course, a constant presence in Keys's repertoire -- the fedora. This year the hat we've all had it with appeared in everything from cracked leather to zebra fur. In addition to the aforementioned tattoo, for example, Keys's Grammy ensemble included coppery satin cargo pants, a strange cropped high-neck leopard blouse and, of course, one of those darned hats. That unfortunate red carpet misstep was shortly followed by a different but equally odd ensemble at the Costume Institute's annual benefit ball. Keys managed to create an unflattering layered effect with a truly terrible take on the tux. The white Dolce & Gabbana pants and cropped jacket were matched to a white shirt and then confused with a very odd rhinestone cut-out vest. Hopefully her sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, climbs the charts in 2004 -- and the singer's own personal journal will include some more suitable style entries. #4.Whoopi Goldberg. #5. Tyra.
